This is precisely what I did, but I consider the time when I was doing content that I had outgrown to be a dead period. I would have mined, explored or even salvaged but they all need skills.
The devs control both the skill training times and how easy it is to unlock content. I just feel that they have got it wrong just now. For example, to do level three missions on my own I will need a battle cruiser. I have been preparing to get my self one for a couple of weeks now. I was almost there, but due to the need to train advanced learning skills I have had to blow my ISK on them and instead of training the skills needed to fly a battle cruiser I have training the advanced learning skills.
So either level three content should be much harder to get to or the skills to get the ships needed to do the content shouldn't have a massive hurdle in the way.
My current dead period will end in three days. Then a day or so later I will be in a battle cruiser. The next step will be a battle ship, I just hope that there are no artificial hurdles to me getting that, or that will be the final straw for me.
I gotta say, I think you are going about this the entirely wrong way.
Yes, skill training is a hurdle. Your hunger for new content however, is the real problem here. You want the game to keep spoonfeeding you new stuff.
When you can't do that new stuff because you're not skilled enough, you ragequit??
The 2x skill-training bonus is new! Added specifically to keep your kind of gamer from quitting.
Instant gratification, right? Isn't that what gaming is about? Five minutes playing WoW and you already have your first level! Fifteen more and you are level 3!!! Holycrap I am awesome for levelling so fast!
....ohwait.
So what exactly is making you think that missions are the only content in this game? You should examine that, since the questing mentality explains it pretty easy. Missions in my opinion are the absolute bottom rung in eve. Even mining serves more of a purpose, adding to the sandbox, rather than taking away from it.
Spoonfed Theme-Park content (ala WoW, Warhammeronline, etc. etc.) does exist in this game. But playing EVE as if it's only a place to do missions is a complete ****ing waste!!
There are hundreds of cool things you can do in a t1 frig or cruiser. Why do you think that training up for a battlecruiser will magically make everything better?
It's just going to be a bigger loss when you lose it (not IF!!).
I'm going to simplify this down to one long-winded statement:
EVE is a world. It is not about mindless progression. Bigger is not better. Smarter is better. If you are bored or struggling with enjoying the game, I'd suggest that is due to your own attitude towards what a game should bring to the table. It is no fault of the game that you can't be bothered to find something more interesting to do with yourself than grind away ctrl-click-f1/f2/f3/f4 on NPCs.
It's a sandbox for Garmon's sake, go kick some sand in someone's eye already!!!!
Or if you find that distasteful, learn to keep others from that fate.
It's your fault only that you can't find 'content' to progress in this game. The best content is not made by CCP.
